Reflections on Ethics Discussion

It was amazing to see that there were so many commonalities from people from different backgrounds. While I was hearing everyone speak on their ethics, I found myself becoming more connected with the people in my class. It almost felt like everyones words were really meaningful and showed how their culture and ideals shaped who they are today. Another important note that resonated with me was the impact of the internet as we were growing up. It is very interesting because for a long time I have been able to both be impacted by the expansion of the internet, but have also been able to see how it has affected people younger than me. My little cousin, from birth, has had access to the internet and I have been able to see how she has taken to it for educational value. Now, she knows that if she seeks for a question to be answered, she can just google it or post it on Instagram. Seeing both the younger people and my own interaction on the internet has been very eye opening and strange. I feel as though my generation was able to understand that the internet was a tool far earlier than the generation after. This may have been due to us developing alongside the internet or us having a time where we were not heavily expose to the internet as it is today. I personally think that since we were able to see the transition of the internet from version 1.0 to 2.0, with the growth of social media and other facets that make the internet, we were able to get a better grasp of what role the internet was going to play within our lives. All of this thinking on how myself and the younger generations were looking at the internet made me forget about how generations before my time saw this tool. This is what led me to speak with Tim Tron about the matter and he showed me a glimpse back in time.  As we talked, I noticed that there was a period very similar to mine that he experienced. There was simply a generational shift that made a rift from the older and younger people via the internet. Older people used books and younger people searched in a search bar. As a result of this, peoples ethics where shifting with the introduction of new information quickly. As people learn more about the world and their place in it, their ideas of self can be changed by new ideas and cultures. I believe that those new cultures and ideas have an impact on our ethics and, in some symbolical manner, forms commonality between us.
